My Favourite Day to Train

Throughout my years training, I have always struggled to decide which days of the week I want take off as a rest day. It doesn't matter what my program is, each day of the week still gives me a different reason to train..

Everyday, any day, weekend, workday, holiday, birthday, Sunday through Saturday.

I enjoy my training, not only the feeling after I’ve finished training, but the training itself. It adds numerous benefits to my life, not just my physique. So I basically want to train whenever I can.

However, rest days are as important as training days. I won’t get into the science behind it as I’m not a scientist or professional (I’ll leave that to LIFE ON FITNESS to post about), but I know it’s necessary even if just to avoid injury and not to burn myself out.

I had a conversation with a friend at the gym about her taking the weekends off training. The bottom line is that there is no one way to do it. It’s about what works for the individual, what works for you. There was a time when I would take a rest day on Saturday’s because it was a day on which I had fewer responsibilities and didn’t have work so it was a good day to relax completely.

The reasons I like to train each day of the week:

Sunday – Less responsibilities and no work, so I can take my time training. It’s also the end of the weekend and the start of the new week. Oh, and gyms are less busy.

Monday – First day of the work week, and there’s no better way to start the week off strong then with a solid training session.

Tuesday – Not as strong a reason to train, but as a work day, a good training session is always enjoyable.

Wednesday – Half way through the week, often referred to as hump day, sometimes a tiring day, I realign with a strong training session.

Thursday – Like Tuesday, not as strong a reason to train, but a work day. Almost the weekend, get through the final hurdles with a good training session.

Friday – Finish the work week off strong with a powerful training session. Review the week.

Saturday – Less responsibilities and no work, so I can take my time and not have to rush my training session. Also, the gyms are less busy and less waiting time on equipment.

As I don’t know which day I would rather take my rest day on, I leave it up to my program. My latest training program is a four day on, one day off model which determines what day of the week my rest day is. I train for four days hitting all muscle groups, achieving all the exercises I want to, and all the objectives I set. Then I take a rest day and recycle my program again for the next four days etc.

This revolving rest day falls out on ‘random’ days of the week, so I don’t have to constantly give up one specific day of training every week to a rest day.

What works for you? What’s your favourite day to train and what’s your favourite day to rest?
