This week, one of the major health headlines has been the move to reclassify the illegal chemical compounds found in diet pills as poison. The legislation to regulate DNP will come into effect as of October 1st, 2023 in the UK. DNP, a “highly toxic and not intended for human consumption” industrial chemical is sold illegally in diet pills as a fat burning substance.
Selling DNP for human consumption was made illegal in the US since it was marketed as a diet pill in the 1930s. It was classified as poison until 1996.
This move comes after almost six years of campaigning and 32 deaths. The average age of the victims was between 21 and 22 years old with most suffering from some kind of mental health illness, eating disorder or body image issue.
